Freshman Biology Honors Lab
The Freshman Biology Honors Lab is an advanced freshman laboratory that focuses on synthetic biology and is taught in the Bioengineering Lab.
This course provides a freshman “honors” laboratory experience in biology – very broadly construed. Currently there is no other freshman “honors” course for entering students interested in pursuing research in the interdisciplinary research related to the life sciences. Many students with extensive backgrounds in biology still wish to take the introductory lecture sequence and they are encouraged to do so by the departmental guidelines, however they would prefer a more advanced laboratory experience. In addition, some students choose to forgo the introductory biology sequence but would still value a more advanced freshmen laboratory rather than jumping right into Integrative Biology. This laboratory experience is designed to address these needs as well as offer experience in the interdisciplinary aspects of the life sciences.
The Freshman Biology Honors Lab provide students with a laboratory experience that ensures the students acquire many core laboratory skills, but do so in the context of a research-based experience at a more advanced and challenging level consistent with the honors designation. A much greater stress is placed on independent learning and problem solving across disciplinary boundaries.
