W&M iGEM
iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machine) is the premier synthetic biology competition. High school, undergraduate, and graduate teams from almost 50 countries around the world compete to solve real world problems using genetically engineered biological systems. William & Mary has participated since 2014, competing at the annual Giant Jamboree against over 350 teams in previous years. Over the summer, students are given a kit of biological parts from past competitions and work on creating new, interchangeable biological parts while striving to make positive contributions to their community and the world. In 2015, the W&M iGEM team competed against undergraduate teams from top schools across the world and won the Grand Prize for their project, along with Best Presentation, Best Education and Public Engagement, and Best in Track: Measurement. In 2016, W&M iGEM was nominated for Best Foundational Advance and Best Poster. In 2017, W&M iGEM won First Runner-Up, along with Best Innovation in Measurement, and Best Mathematical Model. In 2020, W&M iGEM won Best Mathematical Model and Best Therapeutics Project, and was nominated for Best Integrated Human Practices along with Best Poster. In 2021, we were nominated for Best Foundational Advance Project. In 2022, we won Best Software Project and were nominated for Best Presentation and Best Mathematical Model. In 2023, we were a top 10 undergraduate team, winning Best Measurement and receiving nominations for Best Foundational Advance, Best Mathematical Mode, and Best Presentation. We are now recruiting for iGEM 2024!
Thinking about joining W&M iGEM? Here's what you need to know:
iGEM begins in the spring semester, runs during the summer session, and continues through the fall semester. It culminates in an international event known as the Giant Jamboree, during which teams from around the world gather with members of the synthetic biology community to present their research and get the chance to be recognized during an awards ceremony (official dates for the Giant Jamboree in 2024 are to be determined). As such, iGEM is a significant time commitment, both during the semester and over the summer. During the season, a 3-credit COLL 300 course (BIOL 301-Engineering Life), a 1-credit biology journal club, and up to 3 "Research in Synthetic Biology" research credits are available. Participating in iGEM satisfies the COLL 300 requirement. During the summer, a research stipend along with free on-campus housing is provided.
Members of the W&M iGEM team demonstrate creative scientific thinking, a highly motivated work ethic, and a commitment to working collectively as a group. As a team member, you will be conducting a student-directed synthetic biology research project and attending the international iGEM Giant Jamboree. Being part of the W&M iGEM team is a unique research experience unlike any other at William & Mary.
We are looking for students who are interested in STEM fields such as biology, chemistry, math, computer science, and/or scientific outreach. This is an interdisciplinary research team, so we are looking for students with a variety of backgrounds and skills. While previous research experience is looked upon favorably, it is not at all required. In fact, many members of previous teams joined with no prior research experience!
Some skills that are particularly useful for iGEM include; proficiency with CSS/HTML, previous mathematical modeling experience/familiarity with differential equations, graphic design/arts skills, data visualization and analysis skills/proficiency with Python.
While every member of the team will be active in all aspects of the project, we are also explicitly seeking team members who are interested in outreach and the development/design of our team wiki (website). See the application form (below) for more details.
